The Gulkana National Wild River is one of Alaska's 26 rivers in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Designated for its primitive character, abundant fish and wildlife, and geologic, cultural and recreational values, the Gulkana is a popular sportfishing river in Alaska.
Offering easy road access at both the put-in and take-out points and a variety of white-water challenges, river enthusiasts can design trips for an optimal experience.
The Gulkana falls 1,250 feet in the 81 river miles between Paxson Lake and its confluence with the Copper River. The most popular trips take place in the Main stem of the river with nearly 50 river miles ranging from Class I to roiling Class IV white water.
Powerboats may be encountered on the lower river during salmon fishing season (peaking during mid-June to mid-July) as anglers attempt to land a 35-pound King salmon.
For more remote trips, 12- to 20-day excursions down the West Fork traverse lake-dotted country home to exceptional wildlife habitat.
Contact officials at the BLM Glennallen Field Office before embarking on remote adventures.
