Tangle Lakes Archaeological District reveals secrets of lives lived long ago amid the sweeping grandeur of jagged mountains and glaciers in south-central Alaska.
With more than 600 archaeological sites, research has identified at least four different cultural traditions represented throughout the past 10,000 years.
Trails in this area have been used by people since the Ice Age. Athapaskan ancestors hunted caribou for their large winter villages. Miners have used these trails to access placer gold mining claims; and trail use continues today as visitors experience the natural and scenic riches of the Tangle Lakes region.
Located between mile 17 and mile 37 of the Denali Highway, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of activities throughout this nationally-recognized historic place. Low-lying shrubs and wide-open tundra provide ideal conditions for hiking, camping, mountain biking, photography and wildlife viewing.
Common wildlife seen in this region include caribou, grizzlies, ptarmigan, and numerous varieties of waterfowl and birds.
There are eight designated trails within the district, ranging from two to 15 miles in length. For detailed information, contact the State of Alaska or the Bureau of Land Management Glennallen Field Office before you visit.
Note: The Archaeological Resources Act and other laws prohibit collecting or damaging artififacts or historic properties.
