This is one of the largest barrier island and lagoon system in North America and offers excellent ocean kayaking and wildlife watching.
Situated along a 120-mile coastal section of the Chukchi Sea, the lagoon is an important and productive habitat for waterfowl and marine mammals.
There are migrating eiders, terns, gulls, jaegers and brants. Beluga whales frequent the area in June. Foxes, lemmings, caribou, brown bears, seals and bowhead whales are also seen along the coast.
Camping is wilderness only and the weather is rugged year-round. The only access is by chartered plane from Barrow or Kotzebue.
For more information call or write the BLM Arctic Field Office, 1150 University Ave., Fairbanks, AK, 99709-3899.
