Migrating caribou of the western arctic herd pass through the Squirrel River Valley during August, September, April and May.
Aircraft, boats and snowmobiles provide the only access to this area above the Arctic Circle.
The Squirrel River is a wonderful scenic float trip. The river begins in the Baird Mountains and flows southeast to the Kobuk River near Kiana. The 53-mile trip rewards paddlers with remarkable scenery and wildlife as the river meanders across a broad valley in the south, through a spruce forest and into open tundra.
All but the upper reaches of the river are rated Class I. The river provides excellent fishing.
The Squirrel River provides opportunities for winter activities such as winter camping and snowmachining for the experienced outdoors person. However, short days, extreme cold, deep snow, occasional blizzards and difficult access limit use of the area from November through February.
When visiting the Squirrel River, be considerate of other people's property and privacy. Portions of the lower river are either private property or have third-party interests.
Contact BLM's Kotzebue or Northern Field offices for more information.
