The Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail offers alpine-style backpacking along its 27.3 miles.
There are excellent vistas of mountains and a profusion of summer wildflowers. Moss campion, alpine azalea, arctic forget-me-nots and Lapland cassiope are some of the wildflowers growing in the region.
Wolves, bears, caribou and wolverines may occasionally be seen. Birds include rock and willow ptarmigan, gyrfalcon and ravens.
The trail is marked and it takes about three days to navigate the entire length. Summer is the best time to visit, although strong winds and rain are common.
For more information call or write the BLM Eastern Interior Field Office, 1150 University Ave., Fairbanks, AK, 99709-3844.
