Adjacent to the Denali National Park and Preserve, this Alaska state park matches the natural beauty and scenic drama of the federal park, but is much more accessible.
At 325,240 acres, nearly half the size of Rhode Island, the park's terrain ranges from mile-high mountains and valley glaciers to the broad Chulitna River valley.
As varied as the terrain are the recreational opportunities, from kayaking the Chulitna to cross-country skiing and camping at Byers Lake. There are more than 50 miles of hiking trails for every level of ability; both backpackers and day hikers find breathtaking views of Mount McKinley, also known by its Native American name, Denali.
There are three state park log cabins at Byers Lake Campground that are available for rent.
Fishing is good in the smaller, clear streams. The abundant wildlife includes more than 130 species of birds and five varieties of salmon, as well as moose, wolves and bears. Visitors are encouraged to take proper precautions against bears.
The park has reduced staffing in winter, but public use is permitted.
