Innoko National Wildlife Refuge is 300 miles northwest of Anchorage in the Yukon River drainage. The refuge consists of two separate sections and covers 3.85 million acres of the Innoko River basin.
The refuge is nearly 80 percent wetlands and provides habitat for at least 250,000 waterfowl. It was established to protect the nesting and breeding habitats of these species.
Innoko is also home to moose, wolves, black and grizzly bears and caribou in winter. Fur-bearing species in the refuge include beaver, muskrat, weasel, wolverine, lynx, marten and red fox.
The moose population in the Innoko refuge is abundant and provides a food supply for area residents. Sport hunting and fishing also are available.
A float trip down the Innoko is a perfect way to observe the wildlife of the refuge.
