Bering Land Bridge National Preserve occupies a remnant of the land bridge that connected Asia and North America more than 13,000 years ago. The former bridge is now covered by the Chukchi and Bering seas.
This isolated preserve commemorates the migration of prehistoric people from Siberia to North America. The park offers wilderness hiking and camping, fishing, boating, canoeing and wildlife watching. The lifestyle of the Eskimo people of the area attracts many visitors.
Some 112 migratory bird species may be seen, along with seals, walruses and whales. Grizzly bears, foxes, wolves and moose also inhabit the preserve. Eskimos from neighboring villages manage reindeer herds in the preserve.
Other interesting features are rimless volcanoes called Maar craters, the largest on earth, Serpentine Hot Springs and the seabird colonies at Sullivan Bluffs.
Most visitors fly from Nome and Kotzebue to reach this 2.7-million-acre preserve.
There are no roads that lead directly into it, and summer access is usually by bush planes and small boats. Winter access is mostly by small planes on skis, by snowmachine, or by dog sleds.
