Chugach National Forest's 5.4 million acres of scenic beauty extend south and east of Anchorage along the south central Alaskan coast and skirt Prince William Sound. It is one of the largest national forests in the United States, second only to Tongass National Forest.
The Chugach encompasses Kayak Island, site of the first documented landing of Europeans in Alaska, Columbia and Portage glaciers, and the wetland of the Copper River Delta, which serves as the nesting, staging and feeding habitat for millions of birds.
Visitors camp, fish, watch spectacular wildlife on land and at sea and hike on some of the most scenic trails in the nation.
There are no developed ski facilities, but many snowboard and telemark ski in the Turnagain Pass area.
The Begich, Boggs Visitor Center at Portage Glacier, 55 miles southeast of Anchorage, offers panoramic views of the glacier-carved valley plus guided walks and boat excursions.
If calling to make cabin reservations from outside the United States, call 518-885-3639.
