Surprise Cove State Marine Park, located on the western side of the mouth of Cochrane Bay, is one of the most popular anchorages in western Prince William Sound. Access is by boat only.
Hikers explore forested uplands, muskeg and the shoreline of two large lakes. North Lake is reached by a short hike that includes a rope-assisted climb. At low tide, naturalists like to poke about the tide pools which are teeming with life.
There are a few developed camping sites, including a large site above the gravel beach that is often used by groups of kayakers or people with small motorboats.
The park is not staffed in winter, but public use is permitted.
