Thousands of razor clams are harvested annually from the sandy beaches adjacent to the Clam Gulch Recreation Area. In fact, of eight known major concentrations of clams on the Pacific Coast, four are found on beaches between Clam Gulch and Ninilchik.
Naturally, people come to Clam Gulch to dig for these chewy morsels, which reveal their hiding places with small dimples in the mud.
There are other things to do here, however. Clam Gulch is located on steep bluffs overlooking Cook Inlet, with sweeping views of the Aleutian Mountains and their three tallest peaks: Mount Iliamna, Mount Redoubt and Mount Spurr.
Visitors also may be rewarded with glimpses of moose, bald eagles and many small birds and mammals.
A tent campground offers 116 sites, with breathtaking views. Off-road vehicles are allowed on the campground loop road only for access to the beach.
Clam Gulch is located at Sterling Highway, milepost 117.5, between Soldotna and Homer.
The park is not staffed in winter, but public use is permitted.
A fishing license is required to dig for clams.
