The 11,184-acre Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge was created to provide feeding and nesting areas for migratory waterfowl. About 8,000 acres of the refuge are in Alabama and the remainder are in Georgia.
Species living on the refuge include four types of geese, eagles and ospreys, wading and shorebirds, along with alligators, beavers and otters.
Mourning doves, bobwhites, wild turkeys and an assortment of songbirds live in the upland areas.
Woodland mammals such as fox, squirrels, raccoons, opossum, bobcats and deer can be seen along the forest edges of the refuge.
A seven-mile wildlife drive is popular with cyclists as well as motorists. Anglers find bass, crappie, catfish and bluegill.
The Alabama side of the refuge allows dove, squirrel and rabbit hunting. The Georgia side permits a youth hunt for deer and both states allow waterfowl hunting and archery deer hunting.
